I used to consider shaving a chore – I would rush through it and it’d almost be an afterthought whenever I’d take a shower. Sometimes I’d even forget to shave! But now, I schedule it in whenever I do my weekly pamper session and create an entire experience out of it. I like to light some candles, play some music, bring out a few face masks, exfoliate, basically the whole works.
I’m sure most of you have the shaving technique down by now, but I’ve discovered some key steps that I was missing in my shaving routine. Trust me, these are some tips that you’re not going to want to miss.
More after the jump!
Use A Good Razor
This is SO crucial to your shaving experience. First things first, make sure the razor is really sharp (PLEASE replace your razor after a few uses!). I’ve been using this new Venus Platinum Extra Smooth razor and it has 5 diamond-like coated blades for a super close shave. I also prefer to use a razor with a good grip on the handle so I don’t have to worry about it slipping from my hands. The Venus Platinum Extra Smooth’s has a luxe metal handle featuring a satin chrome finish, which elevates my shaving experience AND gives me better control while I shave.
If you’re in need of a new razor or if you’re curious to learn more about this razor, go to your local Target where they have a special Venus Platinum Touch and Learn display until April 22nd.
Exfoliate
We all know that exfoliating is amazing for our face, but it’s also important to do before we shave our legs. The warm water from your shower will soften your skin and hair, making it a great time to gently exfoliate our legs. Exfoliating prevents the dead skin cells from clogging and dulling our razor blades and exfoliating will lift your hair away from your skin so that the razor can get really close to the hairs. I was also taught by an aesthetician to also exfoliate your body, especially your shaved areas, to prevent ingrown hairs and bumps.

Use A Shaving Cream or Oil
For a clean and smooth shave, use a shaving cream or oil so that your legs are really moisturized. The Venus Platinum Extra Smooth razor features 360° ribbon of moisture that releases lubricants when I’m in the shower for extra moisture and protection. I find that when my legs are moisturized, I get a faster and smoother shave so that there is no pulling or tugging. Plus, the cream or oil sticks around on my skin after my shower!
Save It For Last
I like to leave my shaving as the last step in my shower since the warm water softens my skin and opens up my hair follicles. Also, remember to always shave upwards or in the opposite direction of your hair.
Moisturize
Last but not least, moisturize your legs when you’re out of the shower. Trust me, you’ll feel the difference!
