After 20+ years of experience washing my face, I thought I had it all figured out. I used to always wash my face with hot water, pour some cleanser on my fingertips, rub all over my face, and rinse. But after really paying attention to what my esthetician was doing during my facial, I realized I was washing my face wrong all along. Whenever I use this newly learned technique, the cleansers I use seem to work better, especially on my acne-prone skin where I need my pores cleansed daily.
My facials usually start off with some sort of cleansing, but they always start with room-temperature water (SO important) and work the cleanser into a foam before working it on to my face. They also massage it quite a while before cleansing a second time.
“Massage cleansers to a foam or lather on the fingertips, not on your face! This will allow the ingredients to activate as well as save your skin from too much aggressive touching,” says Christina Kasnoff, SF-based aesthetician and owner of The Skin Clinic.
