This tutorial is easier than you think!
This fall you might see more than just vampy and neutral cool shades on nails. Subtle art designs were popping up on the Fall 2017 runways, showing us that it’s not just for the professionals. Even better – there are designs anyone sport for any occasion!
Prep
Negative space is one of the easiest designs that can look edgy and work with any outfit. As with any manicure, file your nails to a shape that flatters your design. (For example, if you want straight and angular shapes, then file your nails square/squoval shape; circular-based shapes, a rounded tip, and so forth.) Next, apply a clear nail base. You can also apply a sheer nude shade on your base for extra protection and color.

Think Fall Colors
The next step is fun – select your favorite fall shade! Fall is probably my favorite time of year for polish because I’m a sucker for vampy shades, which are flattering for my skin tone. Since I’m half-Japanese, my tone is yellow-based which looks best with earthy and dark shades. Dark colors also look striking against nude negative space, particularly blues or greens.
Use tape to create fun shapes
Once the base coat is dry, apply tape over nails to create fun shapes. Have fun with every nail and do something a little different! I personally enjoy blocks and straight lines on manicures and perfect them with tape. It’s a fun and easy DIY look!

Apply Polish Over Tape
After you place the tape over your nails, make sure each tape piece is secure on the nails. This will create a crisp line when you apply polish over the tape. Continue painting each nail and let dry completely. Remove tape and apply a top coat over each nail.

I enjoy a subtle look that’s fun with shapes, but still makes me feel professional in the work place. The most important of this is to do something that’s right for YOU! If you’re curious, Fall will see lots of cool shades leaning toward muted or dark. I can’t wait to try out different looks with this trend. Be sure to keep an eye out for more fun manicures this season!

This is such a fun idea! I’ve loved the idea of blank negative space ever since I saw the tiny little gold decals on a plain nail. Also I’ve been wanting to paint my nails a dark green for multiple Fall seasons in a row, I think this year may need to be the year I do it!
