The beauty world has been obsessed with strobing lately and it seems like it’s all over Instagram! You’ve probably seen it on plenty of celebs, and in case you’re unsure about what strobing is, think of it as extreme highlighting.
Now there are tons of products out there for highlighting, and with strobing, it’s all about layering and layering highlighters to get a really strong glow.
If you love this trend, there are four types of products I primarily use.
- Illuminating Primer: I like to control the amount of glow in my foundation, so having an illuminating primer, like the NYX Born To Glow Illuminating Primer, is the fastest way to begin strobing. I usually add the primer to certain parts of my face that I want to glow the most (tops of cheeks, brow bone, above brow, nose bridge, etc).
2. Matte Highlighter: I add a matte cream product that’s lighter than my skin tone to the areas I want highlighted. This Sonia Kashuk Chic Defining Contour Stick gives just another layer of highlighting so that when I add the actual glow, it pops a little bit more.
3. Liquid/Cream Highlighter:. Next, on top of the matte highlight, I’ll add a cream highlighter on top. The shimmer in this highlighter will make the next step of highlighting even more saturated. You can also add liquid highlighters (i.e. NYX Born To Glow Liquid Illuminator) to your foundation if you want an all-over glow as well.
4. Highlighting Powder: This is probably the most popular way to highlight, but the key when using this product is to make sure you have a cream highlighter underneath to create that strobing look.
Here’s a step-by-step tutorial that I made to get the strobe look, feel free to pin it and share with friends!
I hope this picture tutorial was helpful and it motivates you to try this trend! Let me know if you’d like to see a picture tutorial on which areas to highlight (especially if you’re oily like me) or if you have other tutorial suggestions. 🙂

I have super oily skin, so I have a love/hate relationship with this trend. IT can look so amazing, but it can very quickly become a hot mess on me.

Pretty pretty! I love how you’ve done it, it’s gleaming all over but not to the point of wet looking. I personally like my highlight on my cheeks and a touch down the nose but that’s about it for me! I prefer being matte :p
