tarte Tarteist Lip Paint & Lip Crayon Review & Swatches (c/o)
Last December, tarte was kind enough to send me a few of the new Lip Paints and Lip Crayons to review.
According to tarte, the Lip Paints are an ultra pigmented matte liquid lipstick that can be perfectly paired with the Lip Crayon for a more precise lip application.
There are 14 Lip Paint and 10 Lip Crayon shades available.
The tarte Lip Paints feel like a traditional liquid lipstick, it has a creamy mousse-like texture that reminds me a lot of the NYX Soft Lip Creams and L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Glosses. The NYX Soft Lip Creams aren’t as pigmented as the tarte Lip Paints and the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Glosses are slightly glossier.
After wearing both the Lip Paint and Lip Crayon, it’s safe to say that these liquid lipsticks don’t set dry and will transfer like most lipsticks and lip glosses. The Lip Paints don’t have as much as a sheen to them like the L’Oreal Infallibles, so it did take some getting used to that these liquid lipsticks did not set.

The formula of these lipsticks were a bit streaky, but I really do think it also has a lot to do with the applicator. Unlike L’Oreal’s doe foot applicator (which is wide and flat), tarte’s doe foot was really firm without a lot of cushion, so I had to apply a couple of coats with light pressure to try to even the layers out.
With liquid lipsticks, it can be a little tricky getting a super crisp line, so I really liked how tarte developed coordinating lip liners.
The Lip Crayons were creamy and pigmented and I found it really easy to use to get an smooth application all over my lips, even in the corners.
Here’s a tip: applying the liner all over the lips helps to keep the Lip Paints last longer and also helps your lip color fade away more gracefully.
I also appreciated that there was no sharpening with these liners, however, don’t twist up the liners too far – it easily crumbles. My remedy here was to stick the crumbled piece back into the liner and twist up the liner just a little bit at a time.

I was most excited about Frenemy, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the expectation since the color was streaky. You’ll need some patience or perhaps a separate lip brush when you apply these lip paints. For ladies who have super pigmented lips like mine, my natural lip color peaked out a little with Namaste, and it was borderline too light for me. Boho ended up looking wearable on me, and so did Squad and Thirsty.
If you like the look of matte lips, but don’t want something too drying, give the Lip Paints a try. The shade selection looks really diverse, I just wish the application was a little bit more even.
The tarte Lip Paints are available for $20 and the Lip Crayons for $18 at tartecosmetics.com, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty.

I really hate the names of these colours; it’s like Tarte is trying to be the cool parent, and talking like their annoying teenage daughter. But at the same time, the colours and pigmentation look amazing. So I’m really torn now. Bae is just such a staple colour!
