Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer
I found this in the back of my lip drawer last week and I forgot to ever use it. I’ve never given lip primers much thought since I usually only remember to put lip balm before any lipstick. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll exfoliate or add a lip liner.
So is this added step worth it?
Um, kinda sorta.
I decided to test the Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer with a bright lipstick since those are the lipsticks I tend to have the most trouble with. I also made sure to choose a lipstick that wasn’t particularly long lasting. With brights, you can see my lip lines more, the lipsticks tends to fade after a while, and I have a problem with feathering. According to the label, this primer seems to be the solution to all these problems…
On the left are my lips without the primer and on the right are my lips with the primer. (Sorry about the minor color differences, I blame the auto white balance but you get the idea!)
When you first apply the primer, it creates a white-ish film across the lips and dries down to a matte finish. As it dries, it fills in your lip lines and creates a smooth barrier for your lipstick.
Without the primer, the lipstick applied sheerer and fading/feathering happened much quicker. With the primer, the lipstick applied more opaque and the true color showed more on my lips. Did it fill in the lines drastically? Yup, it was much smoother and the true color stayed on my lips for hours at a time. However, I did notice that it dried my lips after 3 or so hours of wear, so make sure to moisturize and exfoliate before applying the primer.
If you’re a bright lipstick lover, definitely check the Too Faced Lip Insurance Primer out and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the difference it makes.

MAC has one of these, it allows the color to be true on your lips… Not sure if it is worth it but if you really want a true pigmented color it probably is worth it! Love that little dish!

I didn’t know that MAC had one! I haven’t been to the MAC counter in forever (although, I have been eying plumful online for a while now), so I’ll have to try it when I’m there. 🙂 xx

I use the lip primer by NYX and I think it works really well! It’s never dried my lips out 🙂 I use this in place of a lip liner, because I’m lazy. Lol.

The Shadow Insurance has always been on my wishlist! TBH, I never thought about lip primers before but for special occasions where touching up is a pain, I would definitely want to have this! 🙂 Thanks for putting this in my radar, love!

Thanks so much for this great tip. I’m still working on my lipstick game so I’ll see if primers are for me. I prefer darker shades anyway, but I do see a difference between the two photos.
